Luxor Museums and Luxor Art Galleries
(Luxor, Egypt, EG)
Only a handful of museum facilities are on offer in Luxor.
However, as the city of Luxor is often referred to as the world's greatest open-air museum, there is little need for specific locations offering historical artefacts.
Of those that are available, the Luxor Museum is perhaps the highlight with its collection of rare and carefully chosen antiquities. Here are Luxor's main museums and art galleries.
Luxor Museums and Art Galleries: Luxor Museum - Luxor Main Street, Luxor, Egypt, EG
The museum is a small facility with a correspondingly small, yet impressive selection of artefacts with a definite emphasis on quality of exhibits as opposed to quantity. Most of the antiquities on display at the Luxor Museum hail from the Luxor region and include items from the Luxor Temple's hidden cache that was discovered in 1989. Other objects of interest include a cow-goddess head from the tomb of Tutankhamun, a statue of Tuthmosis III and a reconstructed wall from the ninth pylon of the Temple of Karnak.
Luxor museum open: daily, summer season - 09:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 21:00; winter season - 09:00 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 21:00.
Luxor museum admission: charge
Luxor Museums and Art Galleries: Museum of Mummification - Corniche El-Nil street, Luxor, Egypt, EG
A small but interesting collection of artefacts related to the ancient Egyptian practice of mummification can be found at this facility, located close to the Mina Palace Hotel in the heart of Luxor city centre. Among the exhibits on display at the popular Museum of Mummification are the mummified remains of a cat, a fish, a crocodile and the various tools used in the actual mummification process.
Luxor museum open: daily, summer season - 09:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 21:00; winter season - 09:00 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 21:00
Luxor museum admission: charge
Luxor Museums and Art Galleries: Karnak Open-Air Museum - Karnak complex, Luxor, Egypt,
Situated on the northwest corner of the Precinct of Amon-Re and relatively close to central Luxor, within the confines of the Karnak complex, is the Karnak Open-Air Museum. This is an area of great historical interest and is home to a variety of faithful reconstructions of ancient structures that were previously torn down or buried within the pylons of the Karnak complex. Structures of note include the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and the White Chapel of Senusret I.
Luxor museum open: daily - 06:00 to 17:30
Luxor museum admission: charge
